Early life

Moore was born and raised in Portland, Oregon, the son of Missy (Irvine) and John Moore. His family resided in the Mt. Tabor neighborhood, and he is a 1995 graduate of Benson Polytechnic High School. He then attended Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Oregon, for two years. In 1998, he transferred to Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Oregon, where he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2001 and performed for two summers at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

Career

Before he went to Hollywood, Joel starred with Gretchen Stouts and Nina Smidt in Tom Monson's Drug Wars, The High Times (1999), a video about underage binge drinking.

In 2000, he moved to Los Angeles, California. Not uncommon to show business, his early career was primarily in TV commercials, including ones for eBay, Cingular Wireless, and Best Buy. Moore shot an international campaign for a branch of Siemens cell phones, XELIBRI, which won a Lion Award.

Moore has appeared in nearly a dozen television shows, including: LAX, CSI, The Guardian, Strong Medicine, Six Feet Under, Angel, Providence, Boomtown, Boston Public, House, Forever and as Colin Fisher, a graduate student on Bones.

Moore's first major film role was in 2004's Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, though he is also known for his supporting role in James Cameron's Avatar (2009).

Moore starred alongside Katy Perry in her music video for "Waking Up in Vegas". He makes a cameo appearance in the "Beat It" cover video from Fall Out Boy. He co-starred with Katharine McPhee playing her love interest in her music video "It's Not Christmas Without You" for her Christmas album Christmas Is the Time to Say I Love You.
