Early years

Moran grew up in Acton, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston. He attended high school at the Belmont Hill School. He then went to Boston College with a full ice hockey scholarship.

Career

He was drafted 107th overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft and made his debut for the Penguins during their playoff run in the 1993-94 NHL season. He stayed as a Penguin until 2003 where he was traded to the Boston Bruins. Moran found out about the trade while playing hopscotch in his driveway with his daughter and ended up writing the phone number to the Bruins' general manager on his driveway in chalk. During the NHL lockout, Moran had spells in the Sweden's HockeyAllsvenskan for Bofors IK and the United Kingdom's Elite Ice Hockey League for the Nottingham Panthers.

His return to Boston after the lockout was short-lived having been sidelined for most of the season with a knee injury. In 2006, he signed with the Anaheim Ducks but only managed to play one game for them as he also split the season in the American Hockey League with the Portland Pirates and in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga in Germany for Eisbären Berlin. Moran signed with the New Jersey Devils in 2007, but never played for the team, he played for the Lowell Devils until another knee injury ended his season and career prematurely. Recently he was hired as the Assistant Athletic Director at private all boys school Catholic Memorial.

Personal

Since his retirement, Moran has returned to the Boston area where he was an Institutional Equities cSales Trader with Sterne Agee, in 2011 he began work at Revel Resort and in 2012 he started a company for hockey training at a local ice hockey rink near his home until 2014 when he became assistant board of athletics at Catholic Memorial. He resides in Duxbury, MA with his wife and 4 kids.
