Biography

Robert Craig Svihus (born June 21, 1943) is a former American football offensive tackle who played professionally in the American Football League (AFL) and the National Football League (NFL).

High school career

He went to Sequoia High School in Redwood City, California.

College career

In college at the University of Southern California, Svihus was a 1964 All-Pac-10 tackle.

Professional career

Svihus was also drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the fourth round of the 1965 NFL Draft, but chose to sign with the Oakland Raiders. Svihus was a starting left offensive tackle for the AFL's Oakland Raiders from 1965 through 1969, missing only 1 game. After the AFL-NFL merger, he continued for the NFL's Raiders in 1970, but was no longer a starter, starting only 1 game out of 13, replaced at left tackle by Art Shell, a Hall-of-Famer. He ended his career as a replacement with the New York Jets between 1971 and 1973.

Svihus co-wrote a book with Wayne Hawkins (Oakland Raiders offensive guard) and Dave Dalby (Oakland Raiders center) called Raider: How Offensive can you be? A 25-year history of the Oakland Raiders. The book is published by Peninsula Publishing in Monterey, California. The book was written in 1986-1987.
