Nina Arianda (born Nina Arianda Matijcio; September 18, 1984) is an American film, stage and television actress. She won a Tony Award for Best Lead Actress in a Play in 2012 for Venus in Fur. She was also nominated for another Tony for her performance in Born Yesterday.
Early life and education
Arianda was born in Manhattan, New York, to a Ukrainian family. She grew up in Clifton, New Jersey and Heidelberg, Germany.
She received a Bachelor of Arts from Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts, the liberal arts college within The New School university, and a Master of Fine Arts degree from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts Graduate Acting Program in 2009.
Career
Arianda made her Broadway debut in April 2011 in the lead role of Billie Dawn in the Broadway production of Born Yesterday, with James Belushi and Robert Sean Leonard. She appeared Off-Broadway as Vanda in the comedy-drama play Venus in Fur in 2010. The play then transferred to Broadway, the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, in early November 2011, and she received dazzling reviews.
In 2014, she starred in the Manhattan Theatre Club's production of Tales From Red Vienna. She has appeared in several films, including Win Win, Tower Heist, Midnight in Paris, Rob the Mob and The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby. In January 2015, she was cast as Molly, the wife of Will Graham (played by her former Broadway co-star Hugh Dancy) for the third season of Hannibal.
Arianda starred in Fool for Love at the Williamstown Theater Festival in Williamstown, Massachusetts, in July 2014, with Sam Rockwell and direction by Daniel Aukin. Arianda and Rockwell are reprising their roles on Broadway at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre in a Manhattan Theater Club production, with previews that began on September 15, 2015 and the official opening scheduled for October 8, 2015.
Awards and nominations
For her performance in Born Yesterday, Arianda was nominated for a Drama League, Drama Desk Award, Outer Critics Circle Award, and Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Play. She won (in a tie) the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Actress in a Play.
For her Off-Broadway appearance in Venus in Fur, Arianda received a 2010 Theatre World Award and a 2010 Clarence Derwent Award. She also received nominations for a 2010 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Lead Actress and a 2010 Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Actress in a Play. With its run on Broadway, she received her second Tony Award nomination, for Best Actress in a Play and, on June 10, 2012, received her first Tony Award for her portrayal of Vanda in Venus in Fur.
