Playing career

He was a minor league catcher in the New York Yankees organization in 1992 and 1993, playing alongside Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera. In his minor league career, he batted .341 with a .428 on-base percentage.

Managing career

He managed Yankee minor league teams for three seasons, in 2000-02, managing Robinson Canó among others, with his teams achieving a .624 win-loss percentage.

Major league coaching career

After spending five seasons as the hitting coach for the Cleveland Indians, he accepted a job with the Tampa Bay Rays at the same position after the 2009 season, which he has served in to date.
