Shaffer was born in Santa Clarita, California, the son of Ron and Debbie Shaffer.

Personal life

Shaffer has osteogenesis imperfecta, a disease involving a defect in type 1 collagen, which causes fragile bones. His small stature from this condition allows him to portray a character on The Middle approximately three years younger than his real-life age. He is homeschooled and is an avid reader.
